Cultural heritage and nature experience

What

The Jewish cemetery in Weißensee was inaugurated in 1880. It is the largest burial site in Europe, with its 40 hectares. There are almost 116 000 grave sites here. Since the 1970s he has been under the protection of monuments. According to Jewish faith, the grave belongs to the deceased. It must not be eliminated. In this way, unique cultural certificates have been preserved.

But also a diverse, partly pristine nature could unfold here. It offers important habitats for plants and animals. With its approximately 350 vascular plants, it is one of the most species-rich cemeteries in Berlin. Among them are several typical forest plants. Certain areas have been left to themselves for decades. There, among other things, maple and ash forests grew. In total, more than 30 different tree species occur.
