General Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired Berlin (ABSV)

The Allgemeine Blinden- und Sehbehindertenverein Berlin (ABSV) helps blind and visually impaired people. It was founded in 1874 and is 150 years old. Over 2,000 people are members of the ABSV. However, non-members with visual problems and their families can also take advantage of many services.

Most of the members are older, as many eye diseases only develop in old age. The association supports senior citizens in various ways:

Social counseling and training:
The employees help with questions about money, taxes and applications. Training courses help people to move around safely at home and when out and about.

Information on eye diseases:
There are talks and meetings on various eye-related topics.

Advice on aids:
The association shows aids such as talking watches or calendars in Braille or large print. These items can also be purchased.

Advice on visual aids:
A specialist shows magnifying glasses and other devices for better reading.

Smartphone training:
People with vision problems learn how to use their smartphone without sight.

Group meetings:
In many Berlin districts, there are meetings to exchange ideas. A senior citizens' group provides information on topics relating to older people.

Assistance in everyday life:
On request, helpers accompany people when shopping, visiting the doctor or going to events.

Living and care:
The association runs care homes for blind and visually impaired people.

The ABSV helps everyone who has questions about the eye or needs support.
